As sizzling summer temperatures take hold in Central Texas, the Austin Humane Society is encouraging pet owners to take precautions. Heat stress presents great danger to pets, particularly inside cars. Even when it's only 70 degrees outside, the temperature inside your car can reach up to 110 degrees.

One year ago, the Austin Humane Society rescued 147 dogs from a Bastrop home in what is considered one of the worst cases of animal hoarding in Central Texas. Today, many of the dogs are living happily with new families, and to celebrate, AHS is hosting a reunion.

August 30, 2011 - Over the last two days, AHS has completed over 107 into new homes! This influx of adoptions came after AHS announced that all pet adoption fees would be waived on Sunday and Monday following the A/C unit breaking at the shelter and a sense of urgency to get the animals into new, loving homes.

August 29, 2011 A City of Austin transformer blew on Sunday morning at 4am, leaving the Austin Humane Society without electricity and burning up the motors in their air conditioning unit and hot water heater on the hottest day of the year.
